An awardee of Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award and a professor of Jawaharlal Nehru university, Suman Dhar donated his 50 per cent award money to the Kalyani University, the university from where he studied. He donated the money to encourage the students of the university/college to prefer PhD.
Shankar Kumar Gosh, Vice Chancellor of Kalyani University said, on Saturday, Suman Dhar has handed over his 50 per cent award money to him in memory of his late mother.
Vice Chancellor said, “Every year, the student who will come first in MSc in the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics will be given an amount from the donated fund to encourage research.”
At present, Suman Dhar is a professor at JNU in the centre for molecular medicine. He did his masters degree from the Kalyani University.
“As an alumni of Kalyani University, I had decided to share fifty per cent of my award money achieved through Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award with Kalyani University authorities to help students who intend to go for research. I handed over the money to the Vice Chancellor of the Kalyani University on Saturday,” said Suman Dhar.
In the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award of the year 2012, Suman Dhar awarded with Rs 5 lakh. Dhar said, “students who will get help from the fund will also get my mentor-ship.”
