In 2002, Delhi metro had started its operation. In it’s first phase, nearly 300 coaches were inducted and it have complete a decade and a half service- half of their 30 year life span.
Primarily, DMRC(Delhi metro rail corporation) will now focus on floor repair, section connecting two coaches and suspension.The refurbishment will sure that the old coaches can be efficiently used for next 15 years, said the DMRC Spokesperson.
Seventy four coach trains are there in the first batch that are primarily deployed on Red(Dilshad garden-Rithala)and blue (Dwarka-vaishali/Noida city centre)lines.A major revamp is necessary,said the DMRC Spokesperson.
The partition between two coaches have seen the most damage, that need the major renovation. “These 70 trains have 420 gangways. 100% fabric and below replacement, cleaning and anti-corrosion measures include the revamp,” said the spokesperson.
The official added, ” 280 coaches will get a new layer of water paints. The interior will also get the new look”.
“40 coaches require complete floor renovation and and DMRC will also repair flooring of many trains,”said the official.
“The whole process of renovation will take 20 to 24 months. However, much will depend up=on train requirement for meeting the ridership demand, which is expected to surge due to opening of the new section at Gaziabad New Bus adda- an extension of Red line where most of these coaches are deployed,” the spokesperson said.
2,206 coaches are there with the DMRC at present which will undergo periodical checks. These are carried out at 12 maintenance depot and workshops spread across the metro network.
