North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) will install GPS facility in all garbage lifting-vehicles by mid-February to improve the process of lifting and management of garbage in its jurisdiction.
The process will be monitored through a control facility at the NDMC headquaters in the civic center, said Municipal commissioner Varsha Joshi, during a standing committee meeting in Delhi.
She added,”we are going to install GPS in all vehicles used for lifting the garbage. The target is to finish the work by February 15″. There are 250 garbage lifting-vehicles with the North body and around 50 vehicles have already been equipped with the GPS facility. The remaining GPS will be fitted by mid-february.
The door-to-door pick up policy has also been firmed up and the North civic body will suggest ways for alternative activities of livelihood for the ragpickers, official said.
“We have come up with three-four model plans which have been chalked out in consonance with market welfare bodies, resident welfare associations and group housing societies,” Joshi said.
On attendance of sanitation workers, she said, the old biometric system has been ‘closed’ and tender floated for new Aadhaar-based system, which NDMC would try to implement soon.
Additionally, distribution of safai karmacharis in wards across the Corporation would be rationalized.
The Commissioner also stressed on the need to ensure alternative employment for rag-pickers who she argued had an important role to play in the waste management process.
