Karol Bagh Hotel inferno: 17 dead, 3 injured. 5 lakh to the kin of deceased


Delhi’s crowded locality of Karol Bagh engulfed in raging fire early this morning. The incident took place in the Hotel Arpit Palace. Fire broke out in the hotel at around 4 A.M. Most of the people were sleeping that time.

The fire initially broke out in the 2nd floor of the building, says a report .

At least 17 people lost their lives to this tragic incident and 3 other people suffered injuries. A woman and child amongst the deceased.

The fire department received a call  about the fire at 4:35 a.m. At least  2 dozens fire tenders were rushed to the spot, said a senior officer of the Delhi Fire Service.

A short-circuit is believed to cause the devastation.

However, Delhi Home Minister , Satyendar jain said that the government has ordered a magisterial probe into the matter to see if there has discrepancies on the part of the management.

Satyendar Jain also told the reporters that he directed the fire department to inspect the buildings with 5 or more floors and submit a report on their fire safety compliance, within a week.

He also ensured that actions will be taken against those found guilty.

Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal announced an Ex gratia of 5 lakh rupees each, to the kin of the deceased.

“We don’t know the cause of fire yet. An inquiry is on,” he said. “The local MLA said there are more hotels like this. There will be an inquiry to find ones which are breaking the law,”  Mr Kejriwal added.

PM Narendra Modi also expressed his condolence via twitter,

In the wake of the incident, Delhi’s Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia cancelled the event to mark the 4th anniversary of Aam Aadmi Party government. Bollywood singer-composer was to perform in the event, supposed to be held at Delhi’s Talkatora stadium.

“The deputy chief minister has ordered cancellation of today’s event owing to the Karol Bagh hotel fire incident,” a senior government official said.

In a painful and disturbing video released by a twitter user , a victim can be seen dangling and then jumping off.

The head of the Forensic’s team at RML Hospital said that the bodies that reached the hospital are beyond recognition and it would take some time to identify each deceased. Out of the 5 identified till now, 3 were male and 2 female.
