US Secretary of State urges India to ‘avoid escalation’ after Balakot Air Strikes


The tension between India and Pakistan after the Pulwama attack and attack in Balakot is high. In reference to this, US secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, spoke to the foreign ministers of both the countries. He even stressed upon avoiding any further military actions.

History of Attacks.

 A SUV full with 350 kg of explosives was forced into one of the 78 vehicle convoy on 14 February 2019. The convoy was taking around 2500 CRPF jawans from Jammu to Srinagar. 48 jawans were killed and many were injured.

In answer to this, on 26 February 2019, the Indian Air Force crossed the Line of Control. They dropped 1000 kg bombs on a terror training facility in Balakot which was a suicide attack training facility.

On Tuesday, Mike Pompeo talked to the Foreign Minister of Pakistan, Shah Mehmood Qureshi. He pointed out the need to take meaningful action against the terror groups that exist on its soil.

After the attack on Balakot, he spoke to Minister of External Affair, Sushma Swaraj, and emphasised upon maintaining peace and security in the region.

Thus he encouraged both the nuclear armed countries to exercise control, take steps to reduce the tension and communicate directly.
